About

Alex

Hello! My name's Alex Dixon,

I'm 20 years old and am currently studying Biomedical Sciences at the University of the West of England while also working part time at the Cribbs Causeway branch of Carphone Warehouse. My ambition is to move onto a Medicine degree after my Biomedical Sciences degree, and then become a doctor.

I was born in Caerphilly and moved to Hereford at a young age. I was brought up around technology and so my life essentially now revolves around it.

A lot of the technology I own is Apple products, I've founded my own technology blog and I record and edit videos on my YouTube channel (which vary in genre from tech-based to humourous vlogs.)

Alex

I've also had a passion for science from a young age, buying human anatomy pop-up books and watching medical and scientific television shows or YouTube videos to broaden my knowledge of the subject.

My knowledge of the subject has allowed me to ace exams with flying colours and get to the position I'm in today. I'm looking to study a degree in Biomedical Sciences at Bristol UWE University and then a degree in Medicine to become a doctor (in particularly, specialising in Cardiology.)

Right now though, I'm enjoying my final few months in Hereford with my friends and my job before delving into the entirely new world of university!

Experience

Cafe

Café

For a short while in 2005, I worked in a Café in the Gower, Swansea, during a summer holiday. The café was situated in the centre of the holiday park, next to a swimming pool and a bar, and it served both hot and cold food which were made to order. On Sundays, a roast dinner would be served to campers on the site and this tended to be the busiest day working behind the café.

Primark

Primark

I worked as a Christmas temp in Hereford's Primark for a few months in 2005. To be honest, I hated it! I had just turned 16 so was at the "legal" age to get a job and the Christmas rush combined with working with clothes was one of the least enjoyable working experiences of my life. On the plus side, I've learnt how to fold clothes... which is a vital life skill!

Admag

Admag

The job of a paper boy is a lot harder than it initially seemed. On a Tuesday, the papers would come to my house along with hoards of separate leaflets. It takes hours to put one of each leaflet into the newspapers, but the more leaflets you receive in a week, the more you'd get paid. On the Wednesday, I had to deliver to over 100 houses in an area about 3 miles from my house. On average per week, I'd get paid £6 which is ridiculous when you consider the time and man-power required to do the job properly - I was technically working at a rate of £2 an hour!

Gamestation

Game
Group

Working at Gamestation (now part of the GAME group) was a fantastic experience! I worked in the position of sales assistant for almost 2 years and I think it was because I was working in an environment where I thrived and enjoyed myself. The position required you to unpackage and sort deliveries, process all the stock and face-up the shop floor consistently throughout the day, and have a joke with my colleagues every once in a while too!

Website Designer

Website Designer

I initially started web design as a teenager with the intention of becoming a Freelance Website Builder. This didn't go to plan with school thrown into the mix too, but I have designed and built websites for a few companies in the past (including this one you're reading from right now!) and I'm still currently getting offers from local companies to create or upgrade their site. I hope to continue this hobby throughout university.

Carphone Warehouse

Carphone Warehouse

I started working for The Carphone Warehouse in June 2010 and have enjoyed it ever since starting, and I feel that I've progressed with the position rather than remain stationary in my roles (such as working at Gamestation.) Since Carphone is now becoming more than just a phone shop, it's another environment which I love to work in because of all the new technology that comes into our stock rooms. Also, the customer interaction is probably the most intense part of the job and although phone salespeople are perceived as "sharks" - we're actually not paid on commission, which means we can be honest to the customer with our advice and treat them as our "friend" rather than somebody we have to make money from! I'm planning a transfer from the Hereford branch to the store in Cribbs Causeway, Bristol, so I can continue the job part-time as well as spending time at university.

Frequently Asked Questions

What other hobbies do you have?

I'm a keen gamer and play on pretty much every console still available for purchase. I also love music (listening to and creating,) and so I released a free album in 2009 with loads of songs that I'd covered, and it got a lot of downloads. I also like to write my own songs too but none of them have become polished enough to show off to people yet!

What do you do in your free time?

If I have free time, I'll probably be using it to either plan and film a video for YouTube or mindlessly trawling the internet for quite interesting things!

Do you read books?

I wish I could say I did! I used to, all the time. And in fact, sometimes I feel like picking up one of my Harry Potter books are starting from the beginning (they're probably the only book I still read today!) I have hundreds of eBooks on my iPad and Kindle but I can either never find time to read them or I just don't feel like reading. The last book I read was Russell Brand's "My Bookywook 2" and that was a few months ago now!

Do you watch films then?

Again - I'm not a "film person." I've never seen classics like James Bond, Austin Powers or American Pie. I have Lord of the Rings on BluRay but I haven't watched them yet! And now Orange (phone network) are doing this offer where you can get a free film rental on iTunes every week, and I've downloaded 3 so far and not watched them. I much prefer TV shows like Lost, Chuck, The Inbetweeners, Fawlty Towers, Glee and loads more... but saying that, I've never seen an episode of Friends!

What are your favourite quotes?

"When people hurt you over and over, think of them like sand paper. They may scratch and hurt you a bit, but in the end, you end up polished and they end up useless."
- Chris Colfer.

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."
- Dr. Seuss.

"I want to put a dent in the universe."
- Steve Jobs.

"Rebel children, I urge you, fight the turgid slick of conformity with which they seek to smother your glory."
- Russell Brand.
